Manitoba Psychiatric Researchers Honoured – Dr. Jitender Sareen, Dr. Tracie Afifi

The Manitoba Psychiatric Association would like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Jitender Sareen and Dr. Tracie Afifi for their recent awards presented at the Canadian Psychiatric Association AGM, held virtually on November 2nd, 2020.

Dr. Sareen, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and medical director of the WRHA Mental Health Program, is well known to all of us for his world class research and publication of over 300 peer-reviewed articles. The CPA recognized Dr. Sareen for the enormous impact his work has had on the delivery of mental health services by awarding him the prestigious J.M. Cleghorn Award which is presented annually to a CPA member for excellence in clinical research and advancing clinical psychiatric research in Canada.

Dr. Afifi PhD, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Community Health Sciences is the 2020 Recipient of the Alexander Leighton Award in psychiatric epidemiology. This is a joint award from the CPA and Canadian Academy of Psychiatric Epidemiology. It recognizes those that have contributed significantly to the advancement of Canadian psychiatric epidemiology through innovative studies, teaching or knowledge transfer. Her primary research interests are in the areas of child maltreatment and mental health with a focus on resilience, intervention and prevention.
